NEODyS and JPL have updated their 2004 VD17 risk assessments.
Note: These risk assessments for the first time incorporate data from February 2002.
Update: Rob Matson told the Minor Planet Mailing list (MPML) today about how it came that JPL provided him with the original NEAT data to attempt a sure precovery of 2004 VD17 from 2002. The archival data available online through SkyMorph is necessarily compressed, as shown by the amount of data involved in this case ("about a half a gigabyte"). He reports that, "right away [I] could see an improvement in the NEO visibility (primarily due to a decrease in compression noise artifacts)," and he concludes that this "exercise afforded me the opportunity to examine raw NEAT data for the first time, and indicated that there is value in revisiting such data in special cases."

JPL has removed 1997 XR2 as an impact risk. It was discovered in 1997 on Dec. 4th and observed only until New Year's Eve, and was posted as a risk a few weeks after JPL's risk monitoring activity went public in early 2002. Update: Peter Thomas brings to A/CC's attention that the MPC Last Observation page shows that 1997 XR2 was observed by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on Feb. 24th, something not yet reported in an MPEC.
