This report was generated at 2205 UTC with the discoveries of outbound objects 2020 BX9 (MPEC) and 2020 BF9 (MPEC DOU) and of departed objects 2020 BQ9 (MPEC), which flew by us at about 8.9 LD* on January 20th, and 2020 BP9 (MPEC), which went by at about 8.60 LD on the 22nd. Today's DOU MPEC has follow-up for approaching risk-listed 2020 BW5, three objects in the above active traffic table, and six departed objects: 2020 BS, 2019 YF4, and including four risk-listed: 2020 BH, 2020 AY1, and intruders 2020 BB5 and 2020 BK3.

Due to multiple problems there was no daily traffic report posted yesterday. There were four discoveries announced: 2020 BR8 (MPEC) and 2020 BL8 (MPEC) -- both on approach, outbound 2020 BK8 (MPEC), and already departed 2020 BW8 (MPEC), which went past at about 4.5 LD* on January 12th. And the DOU yesterday posted follow-up for eighteen close-passers.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object temporal distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. "LD*" indicates some uncertainty in an object's Earth passage time and distance. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.

Radar observation of one object

The JPL Solar System Dynamics Group Radar Astrometry database has added or updated the following small-body radar observing work:

Data update noted at 2111 UTC when the database was dated 27 Jan.

Photometry and some astrometry is needed for upcoming radar targets. See Arecibo and Goldstone schedules.

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 121 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 121 objects listed. Of these, 67 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 157 listings on the NEOCP today.

To learn how observers use the NEOCP, see the Practical guide on how to observe NEOCP object at Suno Observatory by Birtwhistle et al.

Impact Risk Monitoring  on 27 January '20

Summary Risk Table for Risk Assessments Updated Today   (last checks: NEODyS at 2358 UTC)
See the CRT page for a list of all objects rated recently as risks and our ephemerides page for a list of risk-listed objects under current observation.
The time horizon for JPL and NEODyS listings is 100 years, and both post impact solutions beyond that for some special objects.
For the latest official risk assessments, and for explanations of the terminology, see the NASA/JPL Sentry and NEODyS CLOMON2 risk pages.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" to learn more.
