Traffic Report on 23 January '20
Fourteen objects reported inside ten LD
There are fourteen Solar-System small bodies reported to be within ten lunar distances (LD) of our planet today. Risk-listed 2020 BB is the nearest and exits Earth's SOI as it moves away from 2.25 to 2.72 LD.

This report was generated at 2135 UTC with three discoveries announced late yesterday of approaching 2020 BN3 (MPEC) and risk-listed objects inbound 2020 BH3 (MPEC) and outbound intruder 2020 BK3 (MPEC), plus today's announcement of departed 2020 BL4 (MPEC), which sneaked past us at perhaps 5.1 LD on December 27th (uncertainty +/- 2.821 days). One of today's two DOU MPECs has follow-up for outbound objects 2020 BS1 and 2020 BN and for six departed objects: 2020 BZ1, 2020 BN1, 2020 BD, 2019 YA1, and including risk-listed 2020 BY1 and 2020 BD1, as well as observations from December of risk-listed 2019 WV1 (6.05 days added to 2.75-day observing arc) and from October of 2019 PM (84.37 days added to 2.50).
Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object temporal distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" to learn more.
