Six objects reported inside ten LD
There are six transient natural objects known to be inside ten lunar distances (LD) of our planet today. Nearest is newly announced risk-listed intruder 2018 KY2, which exits Earth's sphere of gravitational influence as it travels out from 2.25 to 4.89 LD. Yesterday it passed us at 0.78 LD at 0524 UTC, and went by the Moon at 1.15 LD about 16 hours later.

This report was generated at 1928 UTC with new discovery 2018 KY2 (MPEC) and with the recovery of distant 2014 HQ124 in today's DOU MPEC, which also has follow-up for three objects in the active traffic tables here plus departed risk-listed 2018 JN. And we have added to this reporting that JPL calculates that 2018 KS, which flew by at 2.05 LD on May 22nd this year, also came by at about 1.61 LD last May and roughly 8.1 LD the May before that.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. "Distant" is used here to describe an object that has come within ten LD since A/CC began these traffic reports (2007) but is not now so close. An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
