Twelve objects reported inside ten LD

Twelve minor objects are reported within ten lunar distances (LD) of Earth today. Nearest of these is newly discovered risk-listed intruder 2017 YE7. It is presently inside the Earth-Moon system, passing us at 0.80 LD at 1746 UTC after flying by the Moon at 1.36 LD at 1407 UTC.

This report was updated at 2112 UTC with the discoveries of 2017 YE7 (MPEC) and 2017 YD7 (MPEC), both in the active traffic table above. Your first local flying rocks traffic report was generated at 1853 UTC with the discovery announced late yesterday of 2017 YQ6 (MPEC), and with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for approaching 2017 VR12, outbound intruder 2017 YZ4, and departed objects 2017 YH1 and risk-listed 2017 YO5, plus astrometry from almost seven weeks ago that adds 1.55 hours to 2017WR1's 45.30-hour discovery arc.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. NEOCP Activity  on 30 December '17

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 76 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 76 objects listed. Of these, 38 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 106 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" to learn more.
