NOTE:  These A/CC news pages will update less often for an extended period. All discoveries and observing credits will be reported, but we may miss some interim impact risk assessments and undercount NEOCP efforts, and there may be some gaps in our traffic reporting for Earth's Busy Neighborhood.

Traffic Report  on 12 July '17

Three objects reported inside ten LD

Three Solar-System small bodies are known to be inside ten lunar distances (LD) of our home world today. 2017 NK2 is outbound from 3.52 to 4.57 LD and 2017 MR8 is inbound from 5.81 to 4.62 LD, while 2017 MC4 departs from our ten-LD traffic reporting "bubble," traveling from 8.72 to 11.72 LD. Coming into the neighborhood next, NHATS target 2017 BS5 enters the bubble on July 16th.

This report was generated at 1848 UTC with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for departed radar target 2017 CS and observation of 2017 MF from June. And first follow-up for NHATS target 2016 UB107 was reported late yesterday as radar from last November, doubling that object's observation arc from 17 to 35 days.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.
