NOTE:  These A/CC news pages will update less often for an extended period. All discoveries and observing credits will be reported, but we may miss some interim impact risk assessments and undercount NEOCP efforts, and there may be some gaps in our traffic reporting for Earth's Busy Neighborhood.

Asteroid/Comet Connection (A/CC) Resources:

The latest A/CC news is available via framed access, RSS news feed RSS news feed, or redirection.

Navigation tips: Use the << and >> arrows on the menus for each regular section (Observers, Risks, etc.) to move to the previous and next day's news for that section. Use the Index menu item to access specific days through a calendar interface. To keep track of what's new each day, watch the Chronology section.

Four objects reported inside ten LD

Four minor objects are reported traveling less than ten lunar distances (LD) from Earth today. Nearest are 2017 ME4, outbound from 6.48 to 7.44 LD, and 2017 MO8, moving away from 7.19 to 9.32 LD, while the other two both leave the ten LD space.

Earth passage I D ~Size Distance Today  Notes
3.44 LD July 22017 NB 35 m  8.34 to 10.44 LD exits ten LD - DOU
4.09 LD July 32017 MO8 21 m  7.19 to 9.32 LD

7.61 LD July 112017 MC4 142 m  < 10 LD July 9 - DOU

This report was generated at 1746 UTC with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for two objects in the accompanying active traffic table and for departed 2017 ND. The DOUs of the past two days reported follow-up for seven objects total plus astrometry from 2015 and 2016 for six objects.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.
