Four of 25 radar images of 2017 BQ6 on February 7th from NASA/JPL Goldstone in southern California. Released in a February 10th news item, they show an "asteroid about [200 meters] in size that rotates about once every three hours [and per Lance Benner] 'is more angular than most near-Earth asteroids imaged by radar.'" Image resolution is "as fine as [3.75 meters] per pixel." Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSSR.

Three objects reported inside ten LD

Three asteroidal objects are reported passing within ten lunar distances (LD) of Earth today. Nearest is radar/NHATS target 2017 BW, which moves in from 6.49 to 5.76 LD.

Earth passage I D ~Size Distance Today  Notes
2.48 LD Feb. 52017 BG30 4 m  5.93 to 6.60 LD NHATS target
3.57 LD Feb. 42017 CX1 8 m  8.76 to 9.63 LD NHATS target

8.0   LD May 292017 CS 452 m  < 10 LD May 26, uncertainty +/- 1.6167 hours

This report was generated at 2115 UTC with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for 2017 BW and approaching NHATS target 2017 CP1, plus astrometry from two weeks ago for intruder 2017 BS32. We also note above the successful radar tracking of departed 2017 BQ6.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.

NEOCP Activity  on 13 February '17

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 41 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 41 objects listed. Of these, nine were "one nighters."

To learn how observers use the NEOCP, see the Practical guide on how to observe NEOCP object at Suno Observatory by Birtwhistle et al.
