Six objects reported inside ten LD

There are six visitors reported within ten lunar distances (LD) of Earth today. Risk-listed 2017 BH30 was inside the Earth-Moon system until 1151 UTC, moving inward from 0.70 LD to 0.135 LD at 0450 UTC, then out to 2.70 LD by day's end, passing the Moon at 0.73 LD at 0920 UTC. Also within Earth's SOI (sphere of gravitational influence) today, new discovery 2017 BJ30 is inbound from 1.77 to 1.04 LD.

Among the objects known to be coming our way next, newly announced risk-listed 2017 BK30 will slip inside ten LD on February 3rd.

This report was updated at 2110 UTC to note additional observation of risk-listed 2017 BJ30 and first follow-up for inbound objects 2017 BB6 and NHATS target 2017 BB7, approaching 2017 BQ6, and departed Moon-buzzing 2017 BA7 in today's DOU MPEC, along with continuing follow-up for approaching radar/NHATS target 2017 BW and departed NHATS targets 2017 BY and 2017 AG5.
        Your first local flying rocks traffic report was generated at 0648 UTC with special follow-up reporting for 2017 BH30 (MPEC) and with four discoveries: 2017 BK30 (MPEC), 2017 BJ30 (MPEC), and already departed objects 2017 BQ30 (MPEC), which flew past at 7.35 LD on January 21st, and 2017 BM30 (MPEC), which went by at 4.69 LD on the 25th.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. "Moon buzzing" is used here to describe an object that recently passed the Moon at less than one Earth-Moon lunar distance without intruding into the Earth-Moon system. NEOCP Activity  on 30 January '17

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 126 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 126 objects listed. Of these, 71 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 159 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
