Six objects reported inside ten LD

Six transient natural objects are reported to be less than ten lunar distances (LD) from our planet today. Closest is newly discovered risk-listed intruder 2017 BH30, which comes in from 4.06 LD to end the day inside the Earth-Moon system at 0.70 LD, on its way to a passage of little more than 1/8th LD tomorrow.

Further out, newly announced 2017 BG30 is inbound from 6.05 to 5.39 LD, 2017 BB6 enters our ten-LD traffic reporting "bubble," moving in from 10.81 to 8.98 LD, and risk-listed 2017 BD6 exits the bubble, traveling from 9.74 to 11.79 LD.

This report was generated at 2222 UTC with new discoveries 2017 BH30 (MPEC, MPEC, MPEC), 2017 BG30 (MPEC), and already departed risk-listed 2017 BE30 (MPEC), which flew by us at 5.74 LD on January 20th. Today's DOU MPEC has the recovery of distant NHATS target 2013 NJ, first follow-up for departed 2017 BN6, additional observation of four recent discoveries: approaching 2017 BQ6, inbound 2017 BB7, and departed objects 2017 BR6 and Moon-buzzing 2017 BA7, along with continuing follow-up for approaching radar/NHATS target 2017 BW and three departed objects: 2017 AK13 and NHATS targets 2017 AG5 and risk-listed 2017 BS5, plus distant 2007 XH16.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. "Moon buzzing" is used here to describe an object that recently passed the Moon at less than one Earth-Moon lunar distance without entering the Earth-Moon system, and "distant" describes an object that came within ten LD in the last ten years but is not presently so close. When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 116 objects listed. Of these, 52 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 161 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
