Traffic Report  on 12 January '17

Four objects reported inside ten LD

Four minor objects are known to be within ten lunar distances (LD) of Earth today, and two of them are leaving our traffic reporting zone. Closest are NHATS target 2017 AZ3, outbound from 6.41 to 7.67 LD, and 2017 AJ13, moving away from 8.93 to 7.56 LD, while intruder 2017 AG13 flies off from 8.67 to 12.17 LD and NHATS target 2017 AF13 from 9.92 to 11.45 LD. Next up, NHATS target 2016 YC8 comes into the ten LD space on January 16th.

This report was generated at 1856 UTC with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for 2016 YC8 and departed 2017 AO4, plus astrometry for comet P/2016 BA14 Panstarrs from last February in the lastest OOC MPEC (Observations and Orbits of Comets).



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. When last checked at 2359 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 49 objects listed. Of these, thirteen were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 50 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" to learn more.
