Four objects reported inside ten LD

Four asteroids are reported flying within ten lunar distances (LD) of our planet today. 2008 CQ may be coming its closest to Earth on this passage, reaching perhaps 4.8 LD at around 0119 UT, but that calculation has an uncertainty of plus-or-minus 2.223 days. 2015 BE92 is outbound from 4.17 to 5.13 LD and 2015 BD511 from 6.11 to 9.60 LD, and 2015 AK45 departs from our ten-LD reporting zone, moving from 9.24 to 10.93 LD.

Next known to be coming into the neighborhood is 2015 BF92, which slides inside ten LD on February 6th, and risk-listed 2015 AZ43, arriving on February 11th.

This report was generated at 1824 UTC with the discovery announced late yesterday of intruder 2015 BP513, which has departed ten LD after passing the Moon at 0.32 LD and Earth at about twice that distance on January 18th, and with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for departed objects 2015 BL311 and radar target 357439 2004 BL86, plus recovery of distant 2011 GP59, which passed the Moon at 0.61 LD in April four years ago.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but puts a focus on transient objects that have recently approached the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI) with a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth. "Distant" is used here to describe an object that has come within ten LD since this reporting began but is not so close during the reported apparition. The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 116 listings

When last checked at 2359 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 116 objects listed. Of these, 73 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 139 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
