The NASA/JPL NEO Program Office issued a statement yesterday that Oort cloud object C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) "will pass extraordinarily close to Mars" on October 19th of next year, and, based on a short five-month observation arc, "we can't exclude the possibility that the comet might impact Mars," putting the odds currently at less than one in 600.
