Traffic Report  on 15 March '13

Six objects reported inside ten LD

Six visitors are reported to be within a radius of ten lunar distances (LD) from our home world today. Inside Earth's Hill sphere, 2013 ED68 is inbound from 2.16 to 1.41 LD, while 2013 EA29 exits the sphere, passing from 3.68 to 5.55 LD, as does radar target intruder 2013 EC20, moving from 3.88 to 4.51 LD.

More distantly, 2013 ES41 is outbound from 6.80 to 7.71 LD and 2013 EN20 from 7.2 to 8.8 LD*, while risk-listed radar target 2007 EO88 enters ten LD, coming from 10.3 to 8.2 LD*.

Next known to be approaching the neighborhood is 2013 ES11, which arrives inside ten LD on March 19th, and newly announced risk-listed 2013 EL89 is calculated with some major uncertainty to arrive on March 25th.

This report was updated at 2300 UTC with new discovery 2013 EL89 (MPEC). Today's first traffic report was generated at 1413 UTC with observations in today's DOU MPEC of 2013 ES11 and risk-listed departed objects 2013 EQ41, 2013 EV27 (first follow-up), 2013 CL22, and intruder 2013 CY (adding 22.95 days to an 18.06-day arc), as well as departed 2013 EF68, 2013 EE68, and 2013 DA1, plus distant 68216 2001 CV26.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical significance but is a useful reporting boundary. Earth's Hill sphere (of gravitational influence) is estimated to extend out to around 3.89 LD. Object distances are interpreted by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. NEOCP Activity  on 15 March '13

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 13 listings

When last checked at 2359 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had thirteen objects listed. Of these, eight were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 27 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
