Minor-Object News on 1 September '07
- "First Impressions," SETI Inst. 1 Sept. - Quote: "The 2007 Aurigid shower was a spectacular display ... onboard the NASA sponsored Aurigid MAC mission. The two Gulfstream GV aircraft ... travelled from Utah towards California and on to the Pacific Ocean. Results from our near-real time flux counts indicate that the shower peaked around 04:10-04:15 PDT (11:10-11:15 UT)... The shower lasted at least two hours, from about 3:15 to 5:15 PDT, but may have started earlier and was still ongoing at 6 PDT." {permalink}
- "2007 Aurigids," SpaceWeather.com 1 Sept. - Note: Growing image gallery. {permalink}
- "2007 Aurigid Shower," Cloudbait Observatory 1 Sept. - Quote: "This is a composite image of 49 meteors collected between sunset on August 31 through sunrise on September 1. Nearly all the events happened between 04:45 and 05:45 MDT." - Note: Also a video and a frequency chart. {permalink}

- Bits & pieces: Ten KBO discoveries, made from 2003 to 2005 and announced in two MPECs today (see below), are coded to JPL's NEAT program with its Mt. Palomar telescope, but are the work of Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz. (Four objects with temporary target designations are included in a table in a paper Brown posted yesterday -- see below, footnoted as "discovered in the All-Sky Caltech Survey" and in process to receive MPC designations.) Also not credited by program code is whoever found 2007 KN4 in NEAT's Mt. Palomar observations from October 2001 published in today's DOU MPEC.
The Planetary Exploration Newsletter (PEN) in an edition yesterday carried an announcement of "a new website for research and analysis news" at NASA Science Mission Directorate.
Some follow-ups to note: Cloudbait Observatory updated its August 19th Colorado fireball report on the 22nd, obtaining a path calculation but still concluding that there were probably no resulting meteorites. Part two of NASA Astrobiology Magazine's article on "Are Planetary Systems Filled to Capacity?" was published August 20th. It tells how a protoplanetary disk, in progressing from dust to planetesimals to planetary embryos, "remains dynamically well behaved" until the embryos have swept up most of the disk's mass, and then "all hell breaks loose." {permalink} - "Meteorite doorstop excites Western Canadian scientists," CBC News 31 Aug. - Quote: "The rock from space was discovered in 1999 in a field west of Davidson." - Note: See a link to more info yesterday. {permalink}
- "Cosmic Cockroaches," Science@NASA 31 Aug. - Quote: "Astronomers have long known that PAHs are abundant not only on Earth but throughout the cosmos -- they've been found in comet dust, meteorites and many cold interstellar clouds -- but who knew they were so tough? "This is our first evidence that PAHs can withstand a supernova blast," [Achim Tappe] says." {permalink}

- "Near Infrared Spectra of Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects" by Barkume, K.M. with M.E. Brown & E.L. Schaller, PDF from Michael E. Brown 31 Aug. - Quote: "We present here an extensive survey of near infrared spectra of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) and Centaurs taken with the Keck I Telescope. We find that most spectra in our sample are well characterized by a combination of water ice and a featureless continuum. A comparative analysis reveals that the near Infrared (NIR) spectral properties have little correlation to the visible colors or albedo, with the exception of the fragment KBOs produced from the giant impact on 2003 EL61. The results suggest that the surface composition of KBOs is heterogeneous, though the exposure of water ice may be controlled by geophysical processes. The Centaurs also display diverse spectral properties, but the source of the variability remains unclear. The results for both the KBOs and the Centaurs point to inherent heterogeneity in either the processes acting on these objects or materials from which they formed." {permalink}
