Minor-Object News on 11 July '07
- Kitt Peak update: The Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) reported this morning local time that it "will remain closed Wednesday and Thursday, July 11-12, because of the continued high level of activity by the general fire response effort and its heavy use of equipment and supplies staged from Kitt Peak. Scientific observing (including tenant observatories) may return to a limited schedule on Friday night, July 13." The Southwest Coordination Center's morning news release (544Kb PDF) states that "Burnout operations were conducted Tuesday to build wide fire lines on the northeast and south sides of the Alambre Fire. The operations were successful and contributed to the 50 percent containment achieved by firefighters working on boxing in the 6,118-acre fire... Retardant and hand lines continued to hold on the northern edge of the fire. No further advance toward Kitt Peak National Observatories was observed, although firefighters remain in place on the peak where they continue working on reducing fuel loads in close proximity to the buildings and other resources on the site."
- "Fire near Kitt Peak 50% contained," Tucson Citizen 11 July - Quote: "Fire authorities estimate the fire will be fully contained by 6 p.m. Saturday."
- "Firefighters Gain Upper Hand On Wildfires," AP at KPHO-TV 11 July - Quote: "Firefighters made significant progress Tuesday on a wildfire burning about two miles south of the Kitt Peak National Observatory, and officials said the threat to the observatory was significantly reduced."
- "Great Perseids," Science@NASA 11 July - Quote: "It's going to be a great show... The Moon is new on August 12th -- which means no moonlight, dark skies and plenty of meteors."
- "Comets Contain Fewer Ingredients Than Thought, Study Says," National Geographic 11 July - Quote: "For a comet to have a composition of a few chemicals, the area where the comet was born must also have had a limited array of chemicals... This may show less mixing of materials in the outer solar nebula ... than previously believed."
- "Comet chemistry theory put to the test," AFP at The Independent 11 July - Quote: "[Studying dying comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3] has prompted astronomers to take issue with a mainstream theory about the impact of "space weather" on these enigmatic wanderers of the Solar System [oberving that] cometary chemistry appears to be the same, inside and out."
- "Colo.-built space probes will be returned to duty," Denver Business Journal 10 July - Quote: "Two successful space probes built by Colorado companies received new assignments Tuesday... Littleton-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. won part of a $25 million contract from NASA to manage a mission to fly the Stardust spacecraft it built to pass the comet Tempel 1 and map the comet's surface ... on Valentine's Day 2011... Broomfield-based Ball Aerospace ... landed a contract ... for the Deep Impact craft to fly within 300 miles of Comet Boethin on Dec. 5 2008."
- "New Mission Given to Stardust Spacecraft," Lockheed Martin 10 July - Quote: "Following a deep space maneuver in September, and an Earth flyby in January 2009, we're planning on passing Tempel 1 by only 120 miles (200 km)... We should be able to clearly see the crater created by Deep Impact which was hidden by debris from the collision [at the time in 2005]."
- "Comet Linear Graces the Northern Sky," Sky & Telescope 10 July - Quote: "Comet Linear (C/2006 VZ13), now crossing through Draco and Bootes [has become] an easy sight through 10x50 binoculars in a dark, transparent sky... It will probably peak in brightness shortly after July 14th, when it comes nearest to Earth [then] fade gradually until perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun, on August 10th."
