Fred Whipple: The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics issued a news release yesterday (photos) about the passing of Fred Whipple, the oldest living American astronomer and one of the last giants of 20th century astronomy. The Asteroid/Comet Connection's Today's issue status: done
suggests that the comet could brighten to naked-eye visibility in early January. The discovery was reported Friday and the first MPEC was issued Saturday. MPEC 2004-Q69 Monday now puts perihelion at 1.203 AU on January 24th, and the MPC Ephemeris Service (MPES) presently shows closest approach to Earth at 0.345 AU during 5-7 January |
