Fred Whipple:  The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics issued a news release yesterday (photos) about the passing of Fred Whipple, “the oldest living American astronomer and one of the last giants of 20th century astronomy.” Sky & Telescope has an Astro News Brief from Monday, has a long piece from yesterday, and has an Associated Press wire story from yesterday. Comet news:  Sky & Telescope has an article from Sunday about comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) that says the MPC-calculated orbit

“suggests that the comet could brighten to naked-eye visibility in early January.” The discovery was reported Friday and the first MPEC was issued Saturday. MPEC 2004-Q69 Monday now puts perihelion at 1.203 AU on January 24th, and the MPC Ephemeris Service (MPES) presently shows closest approach to Earth at 0.345 AU during 5-7 January
